Deluxe French gatefold issue of this jazzy experimental piece derived from a poem by Edoardo Sanguineti and commissioned by the ORTF, with Berio conducting the Ensemble Musique Vivante featuring French avant jazz legends Michel Portal on clarinet, Jean-François Jenny-Clarke on bass, and Jean-Pierre Drouet on percussion. The combination of live players, prerecorded electronics, and disembodied texts, as intricate and complex as in any of Berio's works, forms a mass of references to and quotes from Dante, the bible, T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, other works of Sanguineti (he participates in this recording as speaker), Isidore of Seville, Monteverdi, Stravinsky, and others. The vocal soloists are Christiane Legrand, soprano, Janette Baucomont, soprano, and Claudine Meunier, contralto.

Berio was a pupil of Luigi Dallapiccola and Olivier Messiaen, collaborated with Italo Calvino, was married to Cathy Berberian, associated with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, and Luigi Dallapiccola, taught Steve Reich, founded the Milan Studio di Fonologia, and directed the electroacoustic department of ICRAM in Paris. • Portal worked with Pierre Boulez, John Surman, Pierre Favre, Dave Liebman, Martial Solal, Mino Cinelu, Jack DeJohnette, Francois Tusques, Bernard Vitet, and Sunny Murray, and formed the New Phonic Art improv group with Vinko Globokar, Carlos Roque Alsina, and Jean-Pierre Drouet.

Packing I pack professionally and with the utmost care drawn from years of experience trading vinyl internationally. I use new record mailers from Cameron Packaging (which I have determined are the best and most protective) reinforced with cardboard inserts and bubble wrap padding. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves and with the vinyl outside of the cover to prevent damage. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings. Unless requested, no paper invoice is included in the package, both to save trees and to avoid customs difficulties. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know.
