description:
Fantastic free improvisation directed by Stockhausen and electronically processed by him in realtime. For this recording of works drawn from his Aus den Sieben Tagen cycle of "intuitive music" (in which players are required to fast for three days prior to performing!), Stockhausen assembled a stellar group of european avant-jazz and new music luminaries including the entire lineup of improv group New Phonic Art, with Michel Portal (sax, flute, piano), Vinko Globokar (trombone), Jean-Pierre Drouet (percussion), Carlos Roque Alsina (piano, hammond organ), Johannes G. Fritsch (contact-miked viola), Alfred Alings (tamtam with microphone), Rolf Gehlhaar (tamtam with microphone), and Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark (contrabass). Stockhausen himself performs on short-wave receiver, glass with stones, filters, volume controls, nails, hammer, timber, sand-paper, file, rasp, car-horns, siren whistle, sound-direction, and voice. To get an idea of the ecstatic experimental improvising contained herein, the composer's directions for performing these pieces are, respectively: "Play a vibration in the rhythm of the limbs of a fellow player"; "Play single sounds with such dedication until you feel the warmth that radiates from you." Each was recorded in a single take, "without previous rehearsal or discussion." An interesting side note about this record-- Globokar is actually credited in these sessions as "anonym" in the notes; apparently he found Stockhausen's "sound-direction" stifling to his own improvisation and requested that his name not appear in the credits because he felt he was not allowed complete freedom. Nevertheless, the resulting recording is stunning and highly recommended.

artist info from album notes etc.:
Stockhausen was a German experimental composer who was a student of Olivier Messiaen and Werner Meyer-Eppler, a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis, and worked with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, Cornelius Cardew, Bruno Maderna, and Mauricio Kagel; he pioneered electronic music at the INA-GRM musique concrete studios of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bayle, and Bernard Parmegiani, at NHK Tokyo where Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Jon Appleton also composed, and at WDR Koln along with Herbert Eimert, Robert Beyer, Henri Pousseur, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Gyorgi Ligeti, Franco Evangelisti, Konrad Boehmer, Anestis Logothetis, and Herbert Brun, and he explored improvisation and live electronics with David Tudor, Hugh Davies, Vinko Globokar, Michel Portal, and New Phonic Art. Stockhausen's pioneering work from this period would lay the foundation for live electronic and improv artists like John Zorn, Sun-Ra, Derek Bailey, Borbetomagus, Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV), AMM, Il Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuovo Consonanza, Otomo Yoshihide, Gordon Mumma, Alvin Lucier, David Behrman, Sonic Arts Union, Frederic Rzewski, Alvin Curran, Richard Teitelbaum, Cornelius Cardew, Instant Composers Pool, Nurse With Wound, NWW...
