Six 1968 Concerts from San Francisco's Historic Venue Reshaped Rock and Roll: Here Are the Highlights
Includes 36-page Book and Rare Backstage Interview With Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix's Woodstock performance may be his most famous, but the guitarist named by Rolling Stone as the best in history was never better than at a three-night stand in San Francisco, putting on a total of six concerts that fans have long clamored to here. Featuring the crème de la crème of said performances, now everyone finally gets their wish.
Winterland is drawn from six stellar shows in October 1968 at San Francisco's historic Winterland Ballroom. These special performances celebrated the two-year anniversary of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and came just as the groundbreaking album Electric Ladyland was released. Even given the era's rich history, you'll be hard-pressed to come up with any concert that rivals what's here.
As many already know, Winterland presents some of Hendrix's most spectacular guitar work. This scintillating set is filled with rare live versions of classic songs such as "Manic Depression," "Are You Experienced?," "Tax Free" and "Little Wing" that are not part of any other Sony Legacy releases. Fans will also enjoy Hendrix's dramatic interpretations of Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" and Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" (with the Experience joined by Jefferson Airplane bassist Jack Casady) as well as his rendition of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone," which many critics and fans regard as the ultimate interpretation.
Pressed on eight 180-gram LPs, this special deluxe box set features never-before-released music from each of the six unforgettable Winterland performances. Please note that Winterland is now markedly different from the flawed single disc compilation, long out of print, briefly issued by Rykodisc in 1987 and 1988. Moreover, Winterland also presents a rare interview with Hendrix recorded backstage at the Boston Garden a few weeks after the Winterland performances. This previously unreleased bonus provides fans with a unique window into Hendrix's views about his background, his approach to the guitar and songwriting and future direction of his music.
The fourth round titles from the artist Rolling Stone magazine called "the greatest guitarist of all time" focuses on Hendrix the concert performer with outstanding releases underscoring the artist's electrifying on-stage prowess.
On Thursday, October 10th, 1968, Jimi Hendrix walked onstage with his Experience, bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell, for the opening set of a long weekend at Winterland in San Francisco. The trio would play six sold-out shows over three nights at the 5400 capacity hall. Throughout the run, Hendrix would rotate several different legendary songs through his set lists. Amid the hits and road standards from his 1967 debut, Are You Experienced? - "Red House", "Foxey lady", "Purple Haze" - were a furious, rarely aired "Manic Depression", the concise rapture of "Little Wing" from 1968's Axis: Bold As Love and thrilling previews of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" from Hendrix's bold new double LP, Electric Ladyland, which would come out the following week. Hendrix played with a volume and advanced ferocity that stressed even the best technology available to him, but the tapes were shelved, literally for decades.
Hendrix's October '68 shows in San Francisco were among the best he ever played with the Experience, and this collection - the first, official in-depth presentation of that legendary stand - is the evidence. Hendrix, Redding and Mitchell were at a visceral connected peak in their performing life, and the dream-show sequences feature multiple heated explorations of songs from all over their repertoire up to that point, including the murder ballad "Hey Joe" and the National Anthem - first played live by the Experience in the summer of '68 and already a searing triumph, in a firefight medley with "Purple Haze" a year before Woodstock.
Further magic can be found - like the way Hendrix's glowing feedback ring and Mitchell's free-form thunder gradually resolve into the seductive march and invitation of "Are You Experienced?" the first song from the early show on the 10th - and a revealing interview with Hendrix a month after Winterland, at the Boston Garden.
Winterland presents some of Hendrix's most spectacular guitar work and the 180g 8LP Box Set is filled with rare live versions of classic songs such as "Manic Depression," "Are You Experienced?," "Tax Free," and "Little Wing" that are not part of any other Sony Legacy release. Fans will also enjoy Hendrix's dramatic interpretations of Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" and Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" [with the Experience joined by Jefferson Airplane bassist Jack Casady] as well his rendition of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone," which has been selected as the lead track for this special release.
This special deluxe box set features never before released music from each of the six unforgettable Winterland performances. This deluxe edition of Winterland is markedly different from an inferior single disc compilation, long out of print, that was briefly issued by Rykodisc in 1987 and 1988.
The deluxe edition also presents a rare interview with Hendrix recorded backstage at the Boston Garden a few weeks after the Winterland performances. This previously unreleased bonus provides fans with a unique window into Hendrix’s views about his background, his approach to the guitar and song writing and future direction of his music.
The deluxe edition also features a 36 page booked filled with previously unpublished images by acclaimed photographers Robert Knight, Allen Tannenbaum and Jim Marshall as well as an essay by noted Rolling Stone journalist David Fricke.
