-Artist / Group: Beau-Marks

-Mini bio: Canadian rock & roll/rockabilly/doo-wop group formed in 1958 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Group comprised of Ray Hutchinson (vocals, guitar), Mike Robitaille (guitar), Joey Frechette (leader, piano) and Gilles Tailleur (drums).

-Gilles Tailleur born in 1941 died in 1976 of a cerebral hemorrhage, age 35.

-As The Del-Tones, the group released the rockabilly 45 Rockin' Blues/ Moonlight Party in April 1959. They changed their name to The Beau-Marks in 1959 and released the single Clap Your Hands in 1960 which went to #1 in Canada and was released in the U.S. on Shad 5017 where it entered Billboard in April 1960 and reached #45.

-The Beau-Marks released 11 only 7" 45 rpm Canadian rock & roll/rockabilly/doo-wop original singles between 1959-1963 on Quality Records and one reissue single (circa 1966) which were:

1.) Rockin' Blues b/w Moonlight Party (as The Del-Tones) (1959) Quality K1881, some copies were pressed as Quality 1881X-Canada only.

2.) Clap Your Hands b/w Daddy Said (1960) Quality 1966X-American release on Shad 5017.

3.) 'Cause We're In Love  b/w  Billy, Billy Went A Walking (1960) Quality 1219X-American release on Shad 5021

4.) Oh Joan b/w Baby Face (1961) Quality 1259X-Canada only

5.) Classmate b/w School Is Out (1961) Quality 1315X-American release on Rust 5035

6.) I Used To Love You b/w Yours (1961) Quality 1337X-Canada only

7.) Little Miss Twist b/w Lovely Little Lady (late 1961 or early 1962) Quality 1370X-American release on Port 70029

8.) Clap Your Hands Once Again b/w Summertime (1962) Quality 1404X-Canada only

9.) The Tender Years b/w I'll Never Be The Same (1962) Quality 1423X-American release on Rust 5050

10.) Stay With Me b/w Dark Is The Night (1963) Quality 1493X-Canada only

11.) Now She's Gone b/w Give Me One More Chance (1963) Quality 1532X-Canada only

12.) Canada Quality also released one reissue single (circa 1966): Clap Your Hands b/w Billy, Billy Went A Walking Quality QGT 014X-Canada only

-Note: Regarding #12 above; there are two variations of Quality QGT 014X that we are aware of:

A.) Gold label with black print and THE BEAU-MARKS is printed at the top of the label with GOLDEN TREASURES on the left side with a pirates chest overflowing with treasure and on the right is Quality with the the Q in a box and underneath is SIDE 1 QGT 014X (BMI) 2:06 and at the bottom of the label is printed CLAP YOUR HANDS and in much smaller print Canadian Talent Series.

B.) Gold label with black print and QUALITY is printed at the top of the label with Canadian Talent Series on left side of label without GOLDEN TREASURES or a treasure box. QGT-014X is printed on the right side as is Side 1 and (BMI) 2:06 then at the bottom is printed CLAP YOUR HANDS and underneath The BEAU-MARKS.

-Also, Quality QGT 014X was the only single with some pressings issued with a picture sleeve. With the BEAU-MARKS and song titles printed in red upon a white background then GOLDEN TREASURES ON WAX and underneath is A Series Of Hits Of The Past enclosed in a rectangular box with white print on a gold background. The back lists the titles available on Golden Treasures On Wax Catalog.

-Most pressings of Quality QGT 014X were issued with a generic GOLDEN TREASURES ON WAX 45 RPM SPECIAL GOLD LABEL SERIES sleeve which listed all the titles available on both the front and back of the sleeve.

-Most of these 45's sold in fairly small numbers in Canada and none were able to crack the USA Top 100 charts again, and all are worth tracking down.

-The Beau-Marks who split up in 1963 were the first Canadian rock & roll band to finance their own recordings, record their own material, use local recording studios,  and played their own instruments which made them basically Canada' first garage band and were quite different to other Canadian recording groups of the time such as The Crew-Cuts, The Diamonds and The Four Lads.

-Side one:  Classmate

-Classmate written by The Beau-Marks was the 5th single of 11 singles released in Canada on Quality records and is a mid-tempo teen rocker with melodic lead vocals from Ray Hutchinson, nice backing vocals from the other Beau-Marks with percolating bass, piano, bass and a unique whistling solo!

-Side two: School Is Out

-School Is Out written by the Beau-Marks was released in June of 1961 and is a fast-tempo teen rocker with gritty but melodic vocals from lead singer Ray Hutchinson and good musical accompaniment from the band with strummed guitar, tinkling piano, bass and drums with a hot extended guitar solo!

Record grading:

(M) Mint: A mint record should appear to have just left the manufacturers without any handling; that is, it should appear perfect! No light scuffs or scratches, blotches or stains on labels or writing, tears or splits; nothing. Perfect. And age has nothing to do with it; the same standards for Mint apply to a rare rockabilly single from 1955 as they do to a Top 40 record from 1988! There are no sliding values for Mint. A Mint record cover should appear to have never had a record in it; no ring-wear, dog-eared corners, writing, seam-splits; nothing! Perfect! Even a new, unplayed old stock record can have factory flaws. Mint should be used sparingly and will usually attract a premium value to serious collectors. Mint means perfect and nothing else!

(SS) Still sealed: Still sealed in the factory shrink wrap.

(M-) Mint minus: A nearly perfect record. The record will show no obvious signs of wear, very light surface scuffs from normal handling are permitted but no light scratches. Original finish intact. Picture sleeves should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling.

(VG+) Very good plus: The record will show some signs that it was played or otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or light scratches. Picture sleeves may have some slight ring wear, lightly turned up corners, or a small seam split.

(VG) Very good: Many of the defects found in a VG+ record or sleeve will be more pronounced in a VG record or picture sleeve. Groove wear may be noticeable, the record may have light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound, but the foreign noises will be less prominent than the music. Picture sleeves may have quite prominent ring wear. Creases, folds, seam splits and tears will be more obvious and may appear on all three sides, and there may be writing as well.

(VG-) Very good minus: Foreign noises may be about as prominent as the music. The record still plays through without skipping. The picture sleeve will have more significant seam splits, perhaps to the point where they were taped closed, and highly obvious ring wear and heavier writing. Can serve as a filler until a better one comes along.

(G) Good: We seldom offer a good record for sale unless it is particularly rare for the following reasons: Foreign noises are louder than the recorded music and listening can be distracted by the noise. May or may not play through without skipping, but should be so noted. Picture sleeves are so badly seam split that they may not be able to contain the record within.Tears, folds, writing and ring wear may be overwhelming.
