Item Summary:

While many of the classic pre-World War II bluesmen were deeply religious in their personal lives, Blind Willie Johnson wore his faith on his sleeve. A highly renowned pioneer of gospel blues, Johnson's weathered, bass voice, and deft ability with an acoustic guitar frequently referenced his own Baptist upbringing, even though he himself never considered him a bluesman. Despite this, his mastery of bottleneck guitar-playing (Though some say he actually used the side of a switchblade) was highly influential to future blues legends like Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf, and Blind Willie McTell, while his music would inspire a new generation of fans during the 60s folk-blues revival, including Bob Dylan, and Peter, Paul and Mary.

Blind Willie Johnson's devout spirituality is on full display on Sweeter As The Years Go By, which compiled 16 of his more evangelical tracks onto one album. While they aren't some of his most well-known recordings, they represent Johnson at his purest and most vivid. Throughout Sweeter, Johnson brings his signature style of gospel blues to 19th century hymns, old negro spirituals, as well as his own compositions. Much of these songs had their origins as singles for Columbia and Vocalion, and feature Johnson's trademark booming bass vocals, sparsely harmonic guitar-work, and skillful bottleneck guitar playing, on songs that would later be covered by the likes of Nick Cave, Tom Waits, The Staple Singers, and even Depeche Mode.
