RECORD GRADING SYSTEM

I am a longtime record collector who takes record grading seriously and doesn't cut corners. Here is the grading system I use, which is similar to some of the top industry standards' grading systems. I do not own or sell records that fall below the "Good" rating.

Mint (M)

A mint record is perfect in every way. The record has undoubtedly never been played and is likely still sealed in its original factory packaging.

Near Mint (NM)

A near-mint (NM) record is nearly perfect, with no visible defects. Writing, stickers, or other markings do not appear on the label, and it is void of any "spindle marks" that can result from putting the record on a turntable in the wrong fashion.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

A very good plus (VG+) record may show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are acceptable with this record grade. Minor signs of handling are OK, too, such as marks around the center hole, but repeated playing has not changed the shape or functionality of the hole.

Very Good (VG)

A very good (VG) record will have more pronounced scratches and flaws, and surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, with light scratches slightly affecting the sound. A VG record or sleeve will be worth the money for many record collectors and music fans.

Good (G)

Regarding vinyl record grading, Good (G) does not mean bad! The record still plays through without skipping. A Good (G) record will be worth the money for many record collectors and music fans who want an entry-level price for a record they hope to replace with an upgrade later on or if they're going to frame the album cover jacket.

RECORD COVER (JACKET) GRADING SYSTEM

Mint (M)

A mint record cover is sealed with no cover damage, scratches, or imperfections. It looks like it came from a record shop back in the day.

Near Mint (NM)

A near-mint record cover is free of creases, ring wear, and seam splits and might have minor signs of aging and handling.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

A very good plus (VG+) record cover may have some signs of seam wear, aging, and handling. Slight signs of rig wear might be present, too.

Very Good (VG)

A very good (VG) record cover has more prominent signs of handling and aging. There may be ring wear that is apparent but not overwhelming, and creases or seam splits might be more obvious. VG record sleeves might have writing, marking, or a stamped price tag.

Good (G)

A good (G) record cover may have more prominent ring wear or writing, stickers, and markings. There might be noticeable seam splits, dinged or bumped corners and edges, or tiny tears and folds.
