I first met the members of Styx while working for A&M Records in Chicago. I always found the individual members—Dennis DeYoung, James "J.Y." Young, Tommy Shaw, and brothers Chuck and John Panozzo—talented, confident and driven. Their greatest success came after they left Wooden Nickel (RCA) and signed with A&M Records. I was pleased to have worked with them through the releases Equinox (1975), Crystal Ball (1976), The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces of Eight (1978), Cornerstone (1979), Paradise Theatre (1981) and Kilroy Was Here (1983).
This picture disc is the “Pieces of Eight” album. The cover concept was created by an outside design firm and while controversial at the time, in hindsight, it is remarkable in its iconic status. As always, the band delivered hard-edged rock n roll and great power ballads.
One of the stickers on the cover (on the flap side) indicates the song titles on this disc:
Side One:
Great White Hope I’m OK Sing For The Day The Message Lords of the RingSide Two:
Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) Queen of Spades Renegade Pieces of Eight Aku-AkuOn the other side of the package are two stickers. One states
“Styx Pieces of Eight Special Limited Edition Collector’s Copy A&M PR-4724 Pointed in U.S.A.”
The other states
“This is a numbered, Limited Edition Collectors Record of the Styx “Pieces of Eight” album. These records [picture discs] do not have the sound quality equal to conventional records. This record is: No. 016209”.
