READ THIS! These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality.
They’re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning. I can’t test-play at the minute.
Please don’t bid if this is a problem for you.
So with that said…
LP 1968 Nazz MONO White Label PROMO, NM! Less Than 20 MONO Copies Verified to Exist!
There aren’t many white label promos of this classic LP to begin with, and by far, most promo copies you will see for sale are STEREO promos.
Over the decades, there have been scarce times when the MONO promo has been offered for sale. Some Todd collectors might remember in the late 90’s, when the same copy was circulating the trade magazines, which had a name written on the A-side label. That copy was only in VG condition.
Since that time, there have been less than 20 MONO copies verified to exist.
The album was released in the fall of 1968, several months after the record industry stopped issuing albums in MONO.
Todd Rundgren collectors know that the mono promo singles from this album, “Hello, It’s Me” and “Open My Eyes” are different mixes. THEY ARE NOT SIMPLE FOLD-DOWN MIXES FROM THE STEREO TAPES.
Similarly, this promo album is a specially-prepared MONO mix, with subtle to unsubtle differences from the widely-known stereo mix that we all know and love.
As this album is in stone-mint condition, I haven’t dared to play it in the 30 years I’ve owned it. So I can’t tell you how the mixes differ.
That’s for some very lucky and serious Todd collector to discover if they have a big enough pair to put a stylus to it!
Vinyl--- NM/NM. That’s my highest grade for any record. This copy is blindingly clean, and there are sellers who wouldn’t shy away from grading it stone mint.
Plates--- SG-12847-A/ SG-12848-A.
(Both sides have A-plates!)
Stereo copies were designated as ST-SG-681339 and 681340. The “ST” prefix indicated Stereo, and the completely differently assigned catalogue number indicates a completely different mix, rather than a fold-down mix from stereo.
Both MONO and Stereo dead waxes have the hand-etched “AT,” which was the code for the parent company of the SGC label, “ATLANTIC.” (Or ATCO” for short.)
Cover--- VG. Sent to radio stations in the regularly-issued Stereo cover, but with a DJ sticker, indicating the MONO mix.
Structurally solid, the cover has NO SPLIT SEAMS. But there is general wear. Light to moderate shelfwear to top and bottom seams and spine.
Gatefold--- VG+. Gatefold looks very strong, with the exception of some yellowing from the decades.
**Very cool feature is that there is a stamp on the inside left panel with the date, “Aug. 29, 1968.”
This is significant for two reasons.
First, the album wasn’t issued until October, 1968, giving the DJ’s a full two months to promote it, and secondly, it proves that the MONO mix preceded the Stereo promos by at least one month.
**It’s entirely possible that during this lag time, the MONO promos were taken out of production.
Labels--- NM/NM. Beautiful clean, white labels look 1968-brand new.
**Catalogue number is simply 5001, as opposed to the Stereo catalogue number of the commercial copies, SD-5001.
Inner Sleeve--- EX. Apart from some yellowing from the decades, the inner sleeve is in muscular-strong condition, NO SPLIT SEAMS.
A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original inner sleeve en route.
CAUTION! There has been a startling increase in bidders canceling their bids. A word to the wise, I have started blocking any and all bidders who retract their bids regardless of the reason.
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
