The album gets its title from Doris Day's first big hit, "," which she performed as a part of the band in 1945, and consists mostly of , principally composed in the 1940s, approximately contemporaneously with that song.
Liner notes on the album were written by George T. Simon who was the author of "The Feeling of Jazz". The album's tracks are backed with the lush arrangements from the Orchestra. Mort Garson arranged and conducted. All of the album tracks are medium to slow tempo. The album was produced by Allen Stanton.
The album was re-issued in , combined with , as a CD.
'A Sentimental Journey' is also the title of a stage musical tribute to Doris Day by Adam Rollston. In 2011 the piece toured to Scotland, England and Los Angeles.
