The fourth and last of 's Columbia Records albums of the 1980s, was the singer/songwriter's first album of all-new material in six years and his last recording for another six, making it by definition a pivotal album in his infrequent recording career. It effectively encapsulates his characteristic style, from the hard-rocking honky tonk of "Whiteman's Watermelon" to the gentle "Hill Country Love Song." 's conflicted morality allows him to announce fervently that "You Just Can't Beat Jesus Christ," then follow that song with "The Devil Made Me Do It the First Time" (the inevitable punch line being, "the next time, I done it on my own"). In 's world, men work hard and play hard, too, and faith is observed more in intention than practice. Self-referential, funny, and moving, 's songs, sung with cracked-voice conviction and played with gutbucket force, define outlaw style, here as on his other recordings. This album didn't get a lot of attention when it was first released in 1987, and Sony's Lucky Dog imprint did fans a service on September 19, 2000, by remastering and reissuing it as part of its "Pick of the Litter" series of deserving, underappreciated vintage albums.

Our fair and conservative Record & Cover Grading System is as follows. Grading is visual only:

Mint (M)
- Perfect record and cover. More often than not, only given to sealed albums.
Near Mint (NM) - Almost flawless, one or two very slight visible marks or very light scuffing that in no way affect the sound of the record.
Very Good + (VG+) – This will show signs of some play but handled with care. More than a couple minor scuffs or scratches are possible but will not affect the records play. Slight warping is possible but once again this will not affect play. Slight ring wear on cover and sleeve possible. Sleeve will show minor signs of age.
Very Good (VG) - More than a couple minor scuffs or scratches are possible and may affect the records play to a small degree. Luster isn't as good and some surface noise is possible. More prominent ring wear or wearing around edges & corners.
Good (G) - Still plays but has seen better days. Should play through without skipping, but may have significant surface noise and warps. Cover has significant wear and possible minor tears around corners or edges.
Fair (F) - With one of these you can at least say you have it!  We rarely offer a record in this condition!
