Album Reviews
I
have yet to meet anyone who’s heard Van Zandt’s music and wasn’t moved
by it in some way. He was a great guitar player and excellent singer,
until the last decade of his life, when constant hard living pretty much
destroyed his voice, before finally destroying his body. But where he
truly excelled, and the area where he never lost a shred of ability, was
when it came to writing lyrics. And in the 20 years since he died, I
still haven’t heard anyone better. I’ve certainly looked. Van Zandt
remains a cult artist that criminally few people know about, so I’ve
made it my life’s mission to make sure more people get to check him out.
Below are a few links to songs that I think best exemplify his
strengths.
In my opinion, there was never anyone better than him,
and if someone’s out there who’s improved on him, I’m not aware of it.
Enjoy these clips, and I hope you like them enough to explore his music
further. It’s a real treasure, and it’s almost certainly better than
whatever other stupid garbage you happen to be listening to right now. -thezreview.com by Daniel Bukszpan on August 21, 2017
There is really nobody else quite like Townes Van Zandt. His unique style of largely acoustic music is nothing short of legendary. Often cited by others as a genius of music and highly influential, Townes is underrated. You do not see his albums on those best records of all time lists. Yet, this album as well as many other Townes records, is an outstanding, top shelf LP. This album boasts countless great songs. The album starts off with "For The Sake Of The Song", "Columbine" and the absolute classic "Waiting Around To Die". The LP continues from there with great song after great song. "Colorado Girl" and "I'll Be Here In The Morning" are two other classics. Without question, Townes Van Zandt is one of the most important artists of all time. This album is as good a representation of his greatness as any. -allmusic.com by Mark Yokel, February 13, 2016
