Grading Details and Guidelines for assessing the condition of used records and covers are done visually as follows.

MINT (M) Record: Perfect! No flaws whatsoever. No scuffs, scratches, blotches or stains. No stickers or writing on labels. Age of the record has nothing to do with this grade.

MINT (M) Cover: Will have no wear, tears, writing or seam splits on the cover.

NEAR MINT or NM Record: This record appears virtually flawless. A very minor scuff and very little else can appear on the vinyl. It should play without any noise over the flaw. The flaw is hard to see.

NEAR MINT or NM, M- Cover: The cover looks as close to perfect with only minor signs of wear. Minor impressions to the cover (due to the outer edge of the vinyl resting inside) may be acceptable. The artwork is in good shape with some minor ring wear possible.

EXCELLENT or EX or VG++ Record: Minor scuffs which are only slightly visible that don't affect the listening experience. There may be more than a few scuffs and NO Scratches.

EXCELLENT or EX or VG++ Cover: can have corners that show white meaning slight wear; possible writing on the cover but nothing damaging to the overall look of the cover.

VERY GOOD PLUS or VG+ Record: will show wear, surface scuffs, but still has a great luster. The flaws will be noticeable to the naked eye.  Surface noise may be noticeable when playing but the dynamics will be excellent.

VERY GOOD PLUS or VG+ Cover: may have small writing on it; minor wear and tear to seams and/or spine; slightly dog-eared yet no crackly bends defacing the artwork. No tears or holes.

VERY GOOD or VG Record:  May not look very good, but will still play with some surface noise. The dynamics will still be very good, overpowering the surface noise. A VG record will still have some luster.

VERY GOOD or VG Cover: will look worn and used. There may be some seam splitting, ring wear where the ink has begun to wear off; may have some writing on the cover- no large letters. It will look aged and yellowish due to contamination in the air. It will look decent.

GOOD or G Record: A good record will look very well played, dull, grayish and possibly abused. However a Good record should still play with some form of decency. It will have distracting surface noise, crackle that is continuous, some hiss and/or some loss of dynamics caused from worn grooves or deep scratches.

GOOD or G Cover: will have seam splits; possible taped repaired with scotch tape. May have magic marker writing on the cover. The cover will look damaged from years of abuse, but some artwork will still be noticed.
