Please check below for a guide to gradings commonly used. It is worth noting that there is sometimes no relationship between the sound of a record and the record's appearance.
All shellac discs play with some surface noise. It should also be noted that your personal playback experience will be dependent on the stylus/equipment used.
Visual Grading
A = A few surface marks, possibly some light wear and very light scratches. Surface is nice and shiny.
B = A number of surface marks, visible wear and some light scratches. Surface retains shine.
C = Many surface marks, visible wear and a number of light/medium scratches. Surface retains some shine.
D = Numerous surface marks, significant wear and possible some deep scratches. Surface may be dull.
E = Badly worn with deep scratches. Dull surface.
Audio Grading (tested on a Capitol TA MkII deck with Shure cartridge and stylus. Your playback experience may well differ with other styli/equipment):
A = Relatively low surface noise. Some crackling throughout but the music is unaffected.
B = Surface noise/crackling throughout. However, the music is still prominent above the background noise.
C = Significant levels of surface noise/crackling and pops. The music is still audible and louder passages rise above the background noise.
D = High levels of surface noise. The music is just about audible through the crackling. May be some distorted passages.
E = Extreme surface noise and distortion throughout. Not an easy listen.
Label Grading
