The Chief Rabbi Fernando David Belgrado was born in Florence, and has always played an active part in the Israelite Community of Florence. From an early age he has sung in the choir of the great Synagogue, to which he was appointed First Hazan Cantor. After having obtained a Degree in Rabbinical Studies, he was appointed Head Rabbi to the Community, but he also continued as First Hazan Cantor, a duty extremely dear to him.
Bibliographic references for the book illustrations were taken from the ancient Hebrew manuscripts in the Palatine Library of Parma.
This recording and accompanying publication, is intended to conserve the musical settings for many prayers sung in Italian synagogues. These pieces, transmitted orally from generation to generation, form a heritage of both cultural and emotional value, that today is in real danger of being lost.
