Lonnie Johnson was up there with the top royalty of blues and jazz musicians--with much more formal musical training than his peers from the Mississippi Delta like Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters, and Memphis Slim.
The young Lonnie look lessons on the piano, violin and guitar. Several dozen years later, in the late 30s and early 40s he pioneered styles for jazz guitar and jazz violin that were later widely adopted by other jazz greats.
A French jazz critic summed it up: "His instrumental technique is remarkable and his tone is beautiful; he has a lot of swing and plays fast, fluent phrases with the greatest ease." True that.
