Lonnie Johnson was up there with the top royalty of blues and jazz musicians--with much more formal musical training than his peers from the Mississippi Delta like Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters, and Memphis Slim.  
The young Lonnie look lessons on the piano, violin and guitar. Several dozen years later, in the late 30s and early 40s he pioneered styles for jazz guitar and jazz violin that were later widely adopted by other jazz greats.
A French jazz critic summed it up: "His instrumental technique is remarkable and his tone is beautiful; he has a lot of swing and plays fast, fluent phrases with the greatest ease." True that.  Those talents and sounds got Lonnie invited to sit in with big bands like Louis Armstrong's, Duke Ellington's and many others.  Even in the 1940s when Charlie Christian and others  
This album is the just the Real Deal Lonnie and his acoustic guitar -- a mix of semi-jazzy ballads like "Another Night to Cry" and some juke joint numbers like "Fine Booze and Heavy Dues."   Very fine.
