Ironhead Records

I have collected LP’s most of my life…starting in 1964. Although I’m no expert, I do have an understanding of how to clean and visually grade LP’s.  Each record (other than sealed) is cleaned on an Ultrasonic record cleaning machine for a 15-minute cycle, air dried and placed in a new static free inter-sleeve. Each Jacket is placed in a Poly outer sleeve. Record grading is done conservatively utilizing high intensity lighting. Vinyl is removed from its outer sleeve prior to shipping to prevent sleeve damage. I do not sell records that fall below the VG+ grade (unless it’s rarity dictates such). My grading follows the recommendations of Goldmine which are found below.

Goldmine Grading System

Mint (M): A Mint record is absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly, never been played, possibly even still sealed. Should be used sparingly as a grade, If at all.

Near Mint (NM or M-): A Near Mint record should show no signs of obvious wear. A 45 RPM or EP should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. The same should be true for any inserts and the like.

Very Good Plus (VG+): A Very Good Plus record will show will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. The records surface may show some signs of wear with light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly turned up corners or a slight seam split.

Very Good (VG): A very Good record will have many of the same defects as Very Good Plus (VG+), but they will be more pronounced. There may also be some surface noise when playing the record, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will also begin to be noticeable. Labels may have writing or have tape/stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true for picture sleeves or LP covers.

Good (G), Good Plus (G+): A Good or Good Plus record will contain the same defects as Very Good (VG) and possibly be more pronounced. It can be played on a turntable entirely without skipping, but will have significant surface noise, surface scratches and visible wear groove. A cover or sleeve will have seam splits with possible tape, writing, ring wear wear or other defects that start to take over the object.

Poor (P), Fair (F): A Poor or Fair record will be cracked, badly warped and won't be able to play entirely without skipping or repeating. The picture sleeve may have water damage, heavy seam splits and heavily married with writing and wear. The LP cover will barely be able to keep the LP inside.
