On April 25, 200, a thin red carpet rolled along Harlem's main street tonight to welcome performers and politicians at one of the last lavish pre-campaign finance reform fundraisers.

Over the din of coughing buses and the potent incense hawked by street vendors, celebrities as diverse as former mayoral candidate Mark Green and the Backstreet Boys turned out for the three-hour concert. Guests paid $125 to $5,000 in hopes of watching Michael Jackson moonwalk or former president Bill Clinton play the saxophone. The host of performers did not disappoint.

"Thank you for being here at the Apollo," Clinton said. He thanked the performers and DNC Chairman Terence McAuliffe as he waited to introduce Jackson.

The entertainment was a mix of homegrown talent and world renowned celebrity. A member of the Dance Theater of Harlem pirouetted to Stevie Wonder, and Tony Bennett sang. An Apollo Theater Amateur Night finalist fluttered "I Will Always Love You" to the former president, and Jackson elicited his share of audience squeals during his 20-minute performance. It was talent that garnered many exhortations of "let's hear it for" and "give it up for" by emcees Chris Tucker and Cicely Tyson.

"One vote makes a difference. We'll never forget Florida. After so many people died for the right to vote, we're not going to let Republicans take that away," McAuliffe told the crowd after Jackson sang.

The concert launched a six-month voter registration drive to improve turnout among groups such as students and minorities. Tonight's concert was one of 30 events in 15 states. Earlier today, Clinton and McAuliffe appeared at a New York University student rally.

"We want the Hispanic community, African American community, Asian community," McAuliffe said. "We need to show the world why we're a great democracy."

The DNC raised $2.5 million at tonight's event. It also broadcast the show on its Web site for $10. McAuliffe said this was one of many upcoming fundraisers, including a concert at MCI Center on Oct. 8 that will have "the greatest talent assembled, besides this."

For Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.), the event was another stamp of pride for his district. "We have a national message, and what a better place to start than in the heart of the Democratic Party, Harlem?"

But activist Al Sharpton kept a healthy dose of skepticism. While he praised the DNC's efforts, he hoped it would "follow up on policy and programs . . . otherwise it's like 'Showtime at the Apollo.' It's up at 11 p.m."
