Damon's 'Song Of A Gypsy' is generally regarded as one of the finest privately pressed psychedelic rock records. For over twenty years, it has been one of the most sought-after late-'60s American rock artifacts in the world, with the scant original copies that exist exchanging hands for thousands of dollars. Now-Again's deluxe reissue investigates Damon's chance meeting with fuzz guitarist Charlie Carey and the turmoil he suffered that led to his abuse of heroin and, after he kicked that, the psychotropic experience of LSD. It was an acid trip that took him on a meandering journey to Big Sur's Esalen Institute, where a chance meeting with Ravi Shankar and George Harrison turned everything around for him, as he tuned his five-string guitar to their instruments and wrote 'Song Of A Gypsy'. The album is a fine example of psychedelic rock and for the first time ever it has been corrected to the original's pitch and speed. 'Song Of A Gypsy' is released on Now-Again, the label behind successful reissues of Apple and the Three Oranges, Stark Reality, and Witch, and original releases by Seu Jorge and Almaz, and The Heliocentrics.
