REVIEW ON RATEYOURMUSIC:

This one of my faves and it’s fab. These blokes sound very knowing and cool, there ’s alot of suggested or intimated lyrical concerns that echo, to my mind, Bill Burroughs. I really love this band with their blissed out alienated uptown scuzzy street-feel dream album. Yep this is a bit of a masterpiece, but there’s a real understated quality to it. Again, this is one of those albums that sound a bit weak or unrealised at first. But further excavation reveals a lot going on in there. Remember, this is rock finding NEW FORMS. These guys are right out there, experimenting with words not found on any album you’ve come across.

Yeah Burroughs, but not Kerouac, not Ginsberg, not Pete Seeger or Dylan, but dark old Bill, with his face to the friendless chill-city wind, out on some other time - kick. I reckon these dudes hit hard concrete pavement falling, not running, and got macerated real quick in that faceless place where lives are lost daily - the city.

"ARE YOU ALL RIGHT ??? ARE YOU OKAY????? "

The very first lead-in chords of this LP sounds like the POETS , and their use of unexpected jangly chordings . But after that these dudes leave any romantic pop way behind. These guys are the tail ass of a comet heading into dark ‘n dirty chicago tenement. A pained cry, really very MOTOWN like, emplores “ Run Away , Run Away “ ....yeah common enough sentiments , but you won’t find any other record that has lyrics (that scan) like this one . There’s a heap of musical passion here - and these fellows were really trying to expand the lyrical form. This, like the QUILL album, seems to be without precedents. Who influenced these guys ? This is from the era of Perry Como and Ronnie Corbett singles. This is URBAN music. The fellows seem very troubled , and are on some mission to go down making music. World-weary, shot down, numbing the pain, they just seem interested in women and getting ripped . So what else is new in Rock n’ Roll ? Nothin’ shithead. So it’ s possibly just about HOW it’s done. Or why it’s done . WHY BOTHER ? Why not ? You shittin me, shithead ? Hey, the guitar replaced the gun. But for how long ? What are they doin now ? These fellows have my respect . I doubt they’d give a flying Donald ( Duck, not Fagen)about it, but I really like this album of beautiful spaced nihilistic zeal.
