Secos & Molhados was a groundbreaking Brazilian musical group formed in São Paulo in the early 1970s. The band's name, which translates to "Dry and Wet" in English, encapsulates their eclectic blend of music, incorporating elements of rock, MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), glam rock, and avant-garde performance art.
Led by the charismatic singer Ney Matogrosso, along with Gérson Conrad and João Ricardo, Secos & Molhados emerged during a tumultuous period in Brazil's history, marked by political repression and cultural revolution. Their music and theatrical performances challenged societal norms and captivated audiences with their androgynous aesthetics and provocative lyrics.
In 1973, Secos & Molhados released their self-titled debut album, which became an instant sensation in Brazil and abroad. With hits like "O Vira" and "Sangue Latino," the album showcased the band's unique sound and Ney Matogrosso's mesmerizing vocal range. Their theatrical stage presence, characterized by elaborate costumes and dramatic makeup, further solidified their status as icons of Brazilian counterculture.
Despite their relatively short-lived tenure as a band, Secos & Molhados left an indelible mark on the Brazilian music scene. Their influence can still be felt today, inspiring generations of artists to push artistic boundaries and challenge societal norms.
