Brand new, unplayed!
The Ramones' spring 1977 gig at Tampere Teku was also a source of inspiration for Pop-Idols. In the beginning, though, Sami Laitala, Pasi Lahdenojja, Tapio Pensasmaa and Pauli Toiviainen had the band SAP (short for Finnish Anarchist Party) and Kalle Riihikoski had Shitters . The Shitters only played one song: Blitzkrieg Boppia . Juha Torvinen heard Shitters' ruckus, marched over, tuned the guitars and played the chords of Born to Lose by Heartbreakers . A new world opened up for Kalle Riihikoski after a month of lack of concentration.
The big brothers brought Pasi and Kalle together and this is how Pop-Idols was born in the spring of 1978. The band started practicing in the hobby room next to Riihikoski's veterinary practice and making their own songs as soon as they had learned three chords. The device that made a difference in learning to play was a rocker. When I connected it to the home stereo, the playback immediately sounded great and I didn't notice mistakes so easily.
Soon the band was able to practice a few times at Popeda's training camp in Ikuri, and when Tapio Järvinen, who was Eppu Normaal's roudar, came on guitar, the way to Eppu's alamöki opened. Part of Pop-Idol's several demos, from which this album is compiled, were also recorded there on a reel-to-reel recorder. Oh, and Aku Syrjä plays the drums on a couple of songs. Martti Syrjä , on the other hand, recorded the demo. The gig started right at the heart of the scene, Tampere's legendary Safety Pin club. The band played there no less than four times.
In 1979, the band made it to Hilselp with the song Go go koulolaitos . It was recorded at MSL studio and remained the band's only official recording before the 2023 On Pop LP compiled from archive tapes. I guess the band started to sound like Eppu Normaali after playing in their ugly basement, and when the band played one demo to Epe , she said that she already has one Eppu Normaali, she doesn't need another one.
The army, university studies in Turku and the lack of a recording contract broke up the band at the turn of 1979-80. After Pop-Idols, Kalle came up with the idea of the surf-pop band Mäds , which was already recorded by Poko Rekords.
