ANONYMOUS 'Inside The Shadow' LP (US, Machu Picchu, Catalogue #PICCHU 1) Brand new/unplayed copy of first officially licensed in twenty years Machu Picchu label edition of highest-rated 1970s (1976) private press psych/west coast ballroom scene inspired melodic rock masterpiece by Anonymous.

(NOTE: FIRST OFFICIAL LICENSED REISSUE IN TWENTY YEARS!)

'Originally released in 1976 in an edition of 300 copies, the sole album by Indianapolis' ANONYMOUS stands today as a high-water mark in rock 'n' roll, combining the adventure of west coast ballroom groups, the 12-string majesty of The Byrds, and breathtaking multi-part harmonies to forge something inimitable and one-of-a-kind, with powerful songs that pushed the limit and raised the bar at the same time.'

'When people question the point of getting into 'unknown' records from long ago, this is one of the albums I always bring up. Inside The Shadow displays a talent and artistic commitment as great as anything released by 'famous' classic rock artists, yet due to geographical and personal circumstances, it only saw a local release, and was basically forgotten when private press collectors discovered it in the '90s. The music is drawn from the best possible sources (primarily the Beatles and late 1960s westcoast) yet band leader Ron Matelic manages to create an individual, arresting experience from these massive building blocks. As an intelligently structured mid-'70s album it's reminiscent of Third Estate, while retaining the warmth and earthiness of late '60s music. Another key to the Anonymous magic lies in the vocal blend between Ron Matelic and Marsha Rollings, both very distinct and oddly similar, as if they were siblings. There are some extraordinary guitar passages (check out the break on "Sweet Lilac") and of course songwriting and arrangements that are absolutely top-notch, reminiscent of Buffalo Springfield's groundbreaking "Bluebird". Inside The Shadow is one of the big pieces of from the '70s private press scene, with an appeal outside the usual collectors circles, and unlike most private pressings it stands up for a seemingly infinite number of plays. The band was a studio outfit assembled by Matelic, who ten years earlier played in garage legends Sir Winston & The Commons.' - Patrick Lundborg/Acid Archives
