Bassist/leader cut some of his most exciting and rewarding recordings for Candid in 1960 and this superb four-LP set (which unfortunately is a limited edition) contains all of the music except for a couple of alternate takes that showed up later on. Five selections feature the brilliant piano-less quartet of (on alto, bass clarinet, and flute), trumpeter , , and drummer , and these are highlighted by the bass clarinet-bass conversation on "What Love" and the interplay between the four musicians on the very memorable "Folk Forms No. 1." Other musicians are added to six other selections (including the 19-minute jam "MDM") and five other numbers feature trumpeter who is teamed with altoist on three of the songs; those pieces originally appeared on the Newport Rebels' LP. This is a highly recommended set.

NOTE: This is an ex library copy.  The box is missing and the records and booklet have been placed into a thin plastic browser folder.  If you are looking to pay top dollar for this item in perfect condition then this is not the auction for you.  If you are ok with paying less for a serviceable version that might not be in "like new" shape, but still provides you with listening pleasure, then you are in the right place.

This copy is hand numbered in the booklet #2019 of 7500.  Booklet and records are in VG+ to VG condition.  LP 3 side 2 has mark that looks bad, but I have played it through several times and you wouldn't even know it was there unless someone told you without seeing it.
