You want to feel a bit 'rock and roll, not the pursuit of innovation at all costs? You feel a rush of adrenaline as he provavate a while '? Then this is the album for you. The third work of the Queens of the Stone Age is definitely their most successful, although the other two were not just be thrown away ... But first things first. The line up of the band already makes it clear what is to be expected: the "heart" of the group, Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri (both former Kyuss), were joined by Mark Lanegan (ex-Screaming Trees, which already appeared as an external collaborator in their previous album, "Rated R") and Dave Grohl (ex Nirvana course and current leader of the Foo Fighters, which for the occasion has returned to the drums). Not bad, right?
It is said that Grohl has left the recording sessions for the new album by the Foo Fighters to participate in this project, after hearing the pieces propostigli by Homme and Olivieri. Dave has also stated that this is definitely the best album he ever recorded. The hardcore fans of Nirvana they will have to hurt, but after listening to the disc you just can not blame him. In any case, it is undoubtedly the work where his drumming has reached the highest levels. We come to the content. First, it is funny the idea of a sort of concept album Radio; many of the songs on the disc are interspersed with a fake speaker that announces the next song.
From the first moments we understand that pulls air: the sound is close to that of Kyuss, bass sounds and guitar super tube, very seventies, deliberately "rough", but skimmed the psychedelic hard typical of the group of "Blues for the red sun ", with rhythms and slightly more pressing. The songs, in fact, have a much shorter duration than the pieces of the fathers of stoner, and are characterized by a greater emphasis on the melodic lines, with the alternation and interweaving, often with chorus, the voices of Homme and Lanegan, very different, but complementary. The songs follow one another relentlessly, managing to enclose and melt, while limited in their duration, all the elements necessary for the success of a rock record, with moments of pure power chained stages tinged with a creeping sense of anxiety and episodes of " fun "pure. I do not put out music special: there is a quality background that puts them all on the same artistic level. Worth mentioning, if only because it is the single from the album, the martial "No One Knows".
A mention also to "Mosquito Song", the only acoustic song, a ballad delicate and a bit '"cursed", complete with piano and strings. Ultimately, the real secret of this record is simply one, without having to search for who knows what to who knows where: Josh Homme (the true mind of the group) and his companions wrote and played 15 beautiful songs extricating himself with an incredible balance between various quotations, influences and originality. The riffs are simple but amazingly effective. Amazing because the question arises: how do you think such a disc after nearly 50 years of rock, unpretentious, simple and ingenious at the same time? I admit that was a long time since I appassionavo "heart" so intensely to the new album. A gem in rock history, which winks at the past with devotion and intelligence, being able to play again but not innovative.
