Crime were a band so punk rock they didn't even like being called "punk rock," while proudly proclaiming themselves "San Francisco's First and Only Rock & Roll Band," and in a city that was still shedding the legacy of the hippie era, their sound (brutal, bare-bones rock played fast, loud, and with little subtlety) and their look (they usually wore police uniforms or gangster-style suits on-stage) were a slap in the face to anyone who still wore tie-dye and talked about peace and love. Crime were one of the very first bands on San Francisco's burgeoning punk/new wave scene, and they released the first independent punk single on the West Coast in 1976, "Hot Wire My Heart" b/w "Baby, You're So Repulsive." Crime is a special, limited-edition vinyl box set that features seven 7" singles, including reproductions of the three 45s Crime released in their lifetime, and four singles featuring rare and unreleased material, including a tape of the band tearing through "Be Bop-A-Lula" and "Peggy Sue" in their own distinct fashion. The set includes a 20-page booklet with rare photos, an interview with the surviving members of Crime, and an appreciation of the band from documentary filmmaker Jeff Feuerzeig. -Allmusic
