*** Piano Blues Legend ***

Original 1928 US Vocalion 78rpm. SADLY it has a big crack that was once repaired.

Boogie-woogie, Barrelhouse piano Blues player as well as a vaudeville entertainer and Blues singer Cow Cow Davenport was born 23rd April 1894 in  Anniston, ALA, USA, died 2nd Dec 1955 in Cleveland, OH, USA.

As a youngster he played ragtime and blues for private affairs, in honky-tonks and brothels around Birmingham, Ala., playing ground for much piano  talent: Pinetop Smith, Jabo Williams, Walter Roland, Arthur Bascomb, Avery Parrish, George Tremer, Robert McCoy, Mack Rhinehart, fred Longshaw,  even Jelly Roll Morton. He travelled with tent shows later on the TOBA (Theatre Owners Booking Association) circuit and frequented Chicago and  Detroit in the late 1920s. Cow Cow settled in Cleveland in the late 1930s. He cut numerous gramophone records and some piano-rolls. His 'Cow Cow  Blues' is a boogie classic built around a bass line turning up in several other blues. Little Brother Montgomery and Sweet Williams learned it from  Cow Cow at Chicago house rent parties. (from "Deep South Piano" by Karl Gert zur Heide).
Cow Cow Davenport vocals acc. by his own piano. Recorded in Chicago on October 25, 1928.

artist:  Cow Cow Davenport titles:  Alabama Mistreater  /  Dirty Ground Hog Blues year:  1928 label:  Vocalion - 1227 dead wax:  △1227   /   △1227 -  condition:  (grading is from 1 to 10 with 10 being new) visually: (5) surface 8 to 9 out of 10 (clean E to E+ but a large repaired crack takes the grade down of course)    plays: 5 out of 10 (the crack ticks) Looks (V) surface E to E+     plays V to V+
The record would be a nice player if it wasn't for the crack. The second soundfile uploaded are  the same tracks but now using a simple declicker, making the ticks much less an issue (so the  record is still very usable if you have some simple audio cleaning softwear).
