Carpenters occupy a very special place on the landscape of popular music. Paul McCartney, for one, said that she has "the best female voice in the world: melodic, tuneful and distinctive".
Other performers know the score: Elton John called her "one of the greatest voices of our lifetime," and Madonna has said she is "completely influenced by her harmonic sensibility." Impossibly lush and almost shockingly intimate. Karen Carpenter hit notes with such surety. Its evocative lower register had a richness that no female pop singer ever has matched.
