When the single "Kiss Me" was featured on the soundtrack for 1999's NEVER BEEN KISSED and reached the Top 10, many assumed that Sixpence None the Richer was a new band. The band, formed in New Braunfels, Texas in the early '90s by the husband and wife team of singer Leigh Bingham and multi-instrumentalist songwriter Dale Baker, was in fact four albums old at that point.
1995's THIS BEAUTIFUL MESS expands on the strengths of the previous year's debut THE FATHERLESS AND THE WIDOW. MESS soft-pedals the group's allegorical imagery somewhat and places Bingham's subtle, expressive voice-which recalls both Tori Amos and Kate Bush-in such suitably dramatic settings as the striking "Love, Salvation, The Fear of Death." An excellent progression. Sixpence None the Richer's curious third album, TICKETS FOR A PRAYER WHEEL, is built around four versions of MESS' single, the Sarah McLachlan-like chamber-folk "Within a Room Somewhere."
