"THE YANKEE DOLLAR"
1968 Dot Records DLP 3874 label
The condition of the cover is VG+ with a tiny bit of writing at the bottom center of the front cover (see photos). There is a "MONAURAL" sticker on the front cover and an EMBOSSED PROMO STAMP on the back cover! The condition of the disc is a beautiful M- and it plays great in the RARE MONO MIX!
Scarce, highly rated & top sought after Original 1968 WEST COAST Jefferson Airplane stylized hippie psych with strong array of tunes across both sides...from San Luis Obispo, California, between Los Angeles and San Francisco...
YANKEE DOLLAR released its only album on the Dot Label 1968. Basically set in the Psychedelic/Folk Rock genre ~ the band is comparable with the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band meets Jefferson Airplane/Peanut Butter Conspiracy "SF SOUND"... in fact the West Coast rock elements are ther complimented by hammering organ, fuzz guitar and strong female singing.
The improvisational work calling a memory of the Jefferson Airplane, and a couple of well preformed covers with different arrangents that work, as in the hippie anthem "Let's Get Together", and also Donovans "Catch the Wind" is present and a kind of fresh version.
The Yankee Dollar was originally known as "Pacific Grass & Electric" but the band's name was changed by lengendary music producer Frank Slay (Strawberry Alarm Clock) who was worried that the band's ("Pacific Grass & Electric") name would inhibit its station play on the conservative "Drake Radio Stations" (i.e. Bill Drake banned one of Slay's previous groups, "Rainy Daze" when he discovered that their hit record "That Acapulco Gold" was actually about purchasing drugs). Ultimately, Yankee Dollar, because of Slay's involvement in the project, was banned from the Drake Stations anyway, otherwise, as Billboard surmised at the time, the Yankee Dollar's Album would've been a major hit. .If you like the harmonies of "Jefferson Airplane" and the style of "Strawberry Alarm Clock" with their prominent organ & fuzz guitar parts, then you will love Yankee Dollar.
