Grading Standards

NM- (Near Mint Minus)

No record is ever truly perfect.  If an LP looks like it just came from a retail store, we grade Near Mint Minus.

We only use this grade for NEW or SEALED records.

EX (Excellent) and EX-

Excellent is the best grade for an open LP.  An EX jacket has good color, no ring wear, spine reads well, corners are crisp, edges are not split. An EX LP looks new, with high gloss, bright label and few, if any visible marks.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

Very Good Plus is the high end of Very Good.  A VG+ jacket has good color, little to no ring wear, minor issues with corners/edges/spine.  May have hype stickers, price stickers, or residue.  May have light marks, initials or other marks.  May have promo stamps, stickers, cut-out notches or corner clips.  A VG+ LP looks well cared for, with high gloss, bright label and any visible marks do not affect play.

Most LPs we sell are VG+ or better on the Goldmine scale and are worth $8-12 individually.

Very Good (VG)

Very Good is the default grade for a playable LP.  A VG jacket will have some cosmetic damage which may include discoloration, ring wear, edge wear, spine wear, corner wear, tearing, creasing, split seams, or staining.  A VG LP may be less glossy, have writing or stickers on the label, have visible scratches, marks or scuffs on the vinyl.  These are not museum pieces, just good play copies.

Unless a title is very rare, we generally sell VG LPs for $4-6 individually.  “Among the biggest bargains in record collecting,” according to Goldmine.

Very Good Minus (VG-)

Very Good Minus indicates very heavy use, damage or wear.  Very Good Minus jackets are only useful for display, collages, mixed media art or upcycling projects.  Very Good Minus LPs should be considered unplayable (even if one side is VG+) and are best used for decor, art projects or upcycling.

We only sell VG- jackets and LPs in lots to artists, collectors and upcyclers.

In general, we will grade up for: original shrinkwrap, original inner sleeve, high gloss jacket, hype stickers, EX cover on an older title, undamaged die-cut or novelty jackets, first pressing matrix numbers, heavy vinyl pressings, white label promos, gold promo stamps, autographs, mastering marks from respected engineers/houses such as ARTISAN, MASTERCRAFT, PORKY, Wally Traugott, etc.

In general, we will grade down for: ring wear, spine damage, discoloration, tearing or writing of any kind, low gloss vinyl, price stickers from second-hand dealers, library stickers, promo notches, corner clips, or punches, low quality/budget pressings (e.g. K-Tel, Pickwick, Starline, some RCA DYNAFLEX pressings).
