Paul McCartney - ‘Return To Pepperland’ (The UNRELEASED 1987 album) CD.
‘Return To Pepperland’ is an unreleased and cancelled album by Paul McCartney. It was recorded during 1986-1987 and was due for release in late 1987. The album was a reflection of his time in the Beatles and was loosely based upon the album ’Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ released 20 years previously.
It was produced in part by Phil Ramone with tracks 3, 6, 7, 8 and 16 only existing in studio demo format as Paul halted production. Most of these tracks remain unreleased officially, whilst others (notably ‘Beautiful Night’ and ‘This One’) were re-recorded. Only a handful crept onto various CD single B-sides more than 10 years later almost all having been re-worked and re-recorded.
If anyone has ever read about this album it is often described as a poor record hence it not being released. I must disagree. Give this album a chance and you will hear some great songs. Quite a few do suffer in some part from a very over the top 80’s sound production (just my opinion)! But tracks such as ‘Return To Pepperland’, ‘Lindiana’ and this version of ‘Beautiful Night’ are great. I really feel ‘Return To Pepperland’ could have been a huge hit if produced differently (sorry Phil Ramone, RIP). OK ‘Christian Pop’ and ‘Atlantic Ocean’ are experimental but even the utterly bonkers idea of ’P.S. Love Me Do’ (Paul’s re-working of the Beatles ‘Love Me Do’ and ‘P.S. I Love You’ fused together does grow on you.
It is not know with any certainty why Paul pulled the release of ‘Return To Pepperland’. It has been speculated that he was not happy with the way the album was progressing as a cohesive unit along with the contemporary 80’s sound production of many completed tracks. With Paul having virtual complete say with regards to his creative output it has also been suggested he simply shelved the idea of a Sgt Pepper themed album twenty years after the release of the original for fear of being criticised as to be seen as commercially capitalizing of the 20th anniversary of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. I personally just wonder if George Harrison’s 1987 album ‘Cloud Nine’ had anything to do with it. Featuring the huge hit and Sgt Pepper pastiche ‘When We Was Fab’. Maybe, just maybe George beat him to a 20th anniversary release date. ‘Return To Pepperland’ / ’P.S. Love Me Do’ certainly sound to me like a 1980’s single….
The CD also features two additional and to my knowledge unreleased tracks recorded in 1987. ‘Don’t Get Around Much Anymore’ and ‘Lawdy Miss Clawdy’ were both recorded live on ‘The Last Resort’ on the 27th November 1987. ‘The Last Resort’ was a late night UK chat show hosted by Jonathan Ross.
