I'm not a professional grader visual inspection is method used. These are just my opinion please take a look at photos. Records listed as NM or EX are in super shape but VG+ will or may have some surface sleeve scuffs visible marks or wear on cover sleeve. These were personal records of mine that I have accumulated over the years. And we're stored away not seeing daylight. Typical for being 30+ years
