This album is one of the earliest reissues of earlier "historic" jazz ever made, and it is, as far as I can tell, the first ever Dorseys album. Released in 1941, this 4-Disc album features music from 1929-33. The discs are:
Praying' the Blues / Oodles of Noodles - both Jimmy Dorsey solos backed by the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra. Side one recorded May 13, 1929, Side two July 13, 1932.
Anything / Jazz Me Blues - the Original Memphis Five, featuring the Dorseys, Phil & Ted Napoleon, and Frank Signorelli. Recorded Nov. 21, 1931.
I'm Getting Sentimental Over You / By Heck - the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra - side one recorded Sept. 24, 1932, side two June 13, 1933.
Shim Sham Shimmy / Mood Hollywood - Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, recorded March 14, 1933.
All four discs are in lovely E+ condition. A scuff here and there, but really almost perfect. They play beautifully and sound better by far than any LP reissue or awful CD will ever sound. This is the only way to hear this stuff. Beautiful. The cover has a bit of general shelfwear and some nicks on the edges and spine, but is intact and generally quite nice. A great copy.
