L - BURNA AKA LAYZIE BONE

THUG BY NATURE

AllMusic Review by Jon Azpiri

As a member of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Layzie Bone helped create a unique, sing-song vocal delivery that became the group's trademark. Now under the new moniker L-Burna, he gives exactly what's expected from the Bone Thugs-N-Harmony family, and not much more. Most of the tracks on Thug By Nature are right out of the Bone Thugs playbook: introspective, thoughtful lyrics about street life delivered in rapid-fire fashion. Most of the time, however, L-Burna's good intentions fall flat. Songs like "Deadly Musicals" and "How Long Will It Last?" do little to draw the listener's attention. Only when L-Burna breaks from his usual form does he get any results. The unique horn loops on "Make My Day" and "Battlefield" help break the monotony and provide an all-too-brief glimpse of what might have been if L-Burna had been willing to take more chances.

NOTES:

Artist Biography by Greg Prato

Rapper L-Burna first came to prominence as a member of the Cleveland outfit Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, back then known as Layzie Bone. Bone Thugs hit the big time shortly after signing with Eazy-E's Ruthless label and issuing such hit albums as 1995's E 1999 Eternal (and its double-platinum smash single "Tha Crossroads"), 1997's The Art of War, and 2000's BTNHResurrection. In the wake of their success, the group formed their own label, Mo Thugs Records, with L-Burna named CEO of the company. Layzie soon began going under the new moniker L-Burna after he boasted that he would "burn" the competition after his first solo album was released. 2001 saw the release of L-Burna's first solo outing, entitled Thug By Nature.
