Well, these guys were (and still are) the quinntessential folk-rockers. Coming prior from the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield & The Hollies, the debut of CSN in 1969 blew the minds of said-genre-lovers around the world.. And, Neil's addition in the summer of 1969 was like throwing a can of gas on a bonfire. The madness and creative brilliance that came out of that collaboration is historic and, IMO, unparalleled since. The music, the massive amounts of cash, piles of coca**e, the riots of gorgeous women, and four guys with massive egos combined to make the 1974 tour one of the edgiest and out-there tours of the decade. It's all documented....check it out....
This box set is about as heavy as the tour it documents. The six 180-gram 12" Long Play records containing 40 live tracks from ten different shows, have been masterfully produced and presented. In addition to the LPs, the set includes a "Pure Audio" blu-ray disc that contains the same 40 tracks (thanks to Neil). The set also includes a "bonus" dvd. The LPs and discs sit inside a BEAUTIFUL custom laser-etched maple LP folio case which sits alongside a gorgeous leather hardbound 12" x 12" book with over 114 never-before-seen photographs, all from the summer/tour in '74, were taken by longtime music scholar, archivist, producer, and photographer, Joel Bernstein. Bernstein, who literally grew up alongside Joni, David, Stephen, Graham, Neil and so many others who came out of Laurel Canyon and cut their chops at the Troubadour, not only took all the photographs from the tour, but he (alongside Nash) produced this box set.
The BRAND NEW BOX SET (that I only opened to take photographs) contains the Maple LP Folio with the six 12" LPs inside. These have never been taken out of their sleeves (and consequently have never been played). The folio also contains two discs on the back wooden flap. One is the Blu-ray music recording (same song list) and a DVD. The set also contains a SIGNED and #'d (124/1000) photograph of the set cover shot. It is signed by Bernstein, who took all the photos in the book, and by Nash. The folio and the book, described above, sit inside the wooden Birch case. The case is numbered on the bottom by its feet, the book is numbered inside the front flap, and the photograph is also numbered. All three match (as they should) = 124/1000.
I would evaluate the condition of this to be "Near Mint Plus." While it is BRAND NEW, I have handled it upon opening it, and taken the contents out while photographing them. I am very disciplined about my grading and thus to me, NOTHING is "mint" once it leaves the manufacturer's hands. This is as close as you can come to that however, but the set has been "very carefully" handled, ever-so-slightly.
NOTE: Upon opening the LP folio and taking a few photos, when re-inserting it into the wooden box case, one of the discs in the back slipped out. It seems that the plastic "disc holders" don't work very well when glued to wood as is the case here. SO....I used two pieces of archival, acid-free tissue, held in place by strips of acid-free tape, to cover the two discs until you unpack the set. Once you do, you will see that you should likely store those discs in another setting than inside the wooden folio. **Just sharing this to fully disclose the important details (and so that you don't wonder what the tissue is doing on the back flap atop the discs.
A note about the music: I have listened to this set a few times in another format from another source. If you are a CSN fan, or a Neil fan or a CSNY fan (or all the above), you will love these recordings. Even though the madness surrounding these guys was over-the-top, in 1974, their music was phenomenal. These recordings will blow you away. I would LOVE to hear them on vinyl, and, I always intended to. But, it's not in the cards for me. You though, the audiophile, Neil/Cros/Stills/Graham lover that you are.....need this set!
The set comes in the original packaging. It has form-fitting styrofoam and should be rather secure. I will double box it to make certain. It is heavy, due to the wood box covering and consequently will be expensive to ship. You can choose media mail, which is very affordable, but won't get there very fast this time of year. Finally, I will not charge any "handling fees" or "materials' fees." Just straight up, the cost to ship. Thank you.
Thank you for looking,
And as the guy who belted out a mid-set Weather Report Suite in Munich on 9-14-74 (while Neil was belting out a Pushed it Over the End in Wembley Stadium the exact same night) likes to say, "everybody, hang loose!"
