MONO 1966 BEAUTIFUL (the best!) TOP COPY ...................................................................................... Highly sought for good reason if you enjoy the 1966  Lost Angeles West Coast SUNSET STRIP "NOW SOUNDS"
......................................................................................
These GRASSROOTS were then, THE "OTHER BYRDS" ...nothing to do with the hitsville pop-scene GRASSROOTS
.....................................................
Well known price guides have this album valued for $$$ three figures and suppose that may be because the album was produced in low end numbers in just a one run production in 1966 due to the fact that these cats, the original Grassroots, broke up just after the album was released. The more commercial Grassroots formed out of the ashes of this far different "Grassroots" MK1 ( and way more appealing group to these tastes.)

In 1966 the happening club circut of LA's Sunset Strip was coming together. This Grassroots band were one of the early cool groups there, at the strip, along with the likes of The Byrds, The Stone Poneys, The Leaves, The Seeds, Love, and others, playing a brand of reverb electric jangle guitars led melodic song structures like the Byrds and 1st Lp era Turtles (before pop-stardom)

The Grassroots had a minor masterpiece hit in "Where Were You When I Needed You" included on this album and much of the album is in the same vein with highlights up and down each side, including the infectious "Lollipop Train", "Only When You're Lonely", "Look Out Girl" as well as a great take on Dylans's "Mr Jones (Ballad Of A Thin Man). The album grows very strong with repeat plays. Indeed, this first album is a matter of much confusion; apparently these original Grass Roots were pretty much a front for the songwriting team of P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, who owned the rights to the band and their name and who even performed on much of the album. It was this case that they were able to re-assemble a completely new band when the original members quit due to the (pop) direction the songwriting team was pushing on the band. In any case, this is decent, and top of the line for 1966 includes a strong early version of "You Baby," which was a hit for the Turtles.

SIDE A:

You Didn't Have To Be So Nice

Tell Me (Rolling Stones)
