Very rare original copy of the second volume of Huggie Boy’s Rare R&B Oldies on Dubtone 1247. This was, I believe, the very first series of “oldies” compilations featuring classic Doo-Wop and early rock and roll, already by the early 60s really popular with the lowrider crowd, and featured on Huggie Boy’s radio show which was an East LA staple for many years. These comps were made just for that East LA scene, and are hard to find outside of Southern California. They were made in quite small numbers, as they were only available in the LA area in those days. The first volume was in 1963 or 1964, I think, predating the Oldies But Goodies comps by several months. Anyhow this is quite a rare copy, and many of these songs haven’t been compiled anywhere else. There are songs by the Orlons, the Dubs, Johnny Ace, Little Caesar and the Romans, Frankie and Johnny, The Paradons, Yvonne Carroll, and on and on. Really fantastic stuff, and truly rare.
The disc has a bit of wear, with lots of visible marks and scuffs, but it actually plays really well. There is a bit of background crackle but it plays nice and clearly with no skips. The crackle is mostly only noticeable between songs. The music is generally louder than the noise. The cover has some writing on the back and some edgewear in spots, and a scuff or two, but is really in pretty nice shape with no seam splits or much of any heavy wear. Really nice. These originals are so rare to find in any condition; this one isn’t perfect but it plays really well.
