Absolutely gorgeous copy of the original 1973 pressing of the incredible 7-LP boxed set of Carlo Gesualdo’s complete five-part madrigals, sung by the Quintetto Vocale Italiano on Telefunken’s Musical Italiana series SJA-25086-T/1-7. This is truly a spectacular recording, considered by many, many collectors and music scholars to be the best recording of Gesualdo ever made. I am inclined to agree. For many years this was the Bible for Gesualdo’s music, before he became more widely recorded, and is the first truly extensive attempt at cataloging so much of his then-not-so-known music. Really an incredible recording, with all the strange magical nuance that you love from Gesualdo, sung by a close-miked quintet rather than a cumbersome choir, to really bring out the overtones and interplay of the opposing lines. What a record! To my ears it’s one of the greatest recordings of all time. And this copy is nearly perfect. All 7 discs are just about mint and play flawlessly and just beautifully. The box only has the tiniest signs of gentle use, and the booklet has only a bit of stinking from handling. Really this is a top, top original copy that you will never be able to upgrade. Impossible to beat.
