ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This fascinating and rare LP from Melodiya (33 M70-39701-02, Soviet pressing, pink label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features the great pianist Alexander Iokheles in a sublime performances of Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Schumann Op. 9, recorded circa 1950.

Remarkably, on the reverse side of the LP, one is offered a masterclass (in Russian) on this work by Iokheles himself in which he demonstrates at the piano various sections of this work.

Iokheles (sometimes spelled Iocheles) was a superlative artist and regrettably made all too few discs. The Brahms is one of his more elusive LPs. and has never been re-issued on CD.

There are brief liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Russian only. The front cover photo of Iokheles is uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is ringwear, discoloration, and light edgewear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, and attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there is light surface noise throughout, in general the playback remains quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
