ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This lovely and celebrated recording, here in a superb re-issue, from Decca (6.42221, German Teldec · Telefunken-Decca pressing, blue label, stereo) features Peter Maag's unsurpassed account of Mendelssohn's Incidental Music to a Midsummer Night's Dream, made in the rich acoustics of Kingsway Hall on 27/28 February 1957 (producer: James Walker / engineers: Kenneth E. Wilkinson and Cyril Windebank, engineer) – with the London Symphony Orchestra on resplendent form, abetted by the beautiful voices of Jennifer Vyvyan and Marian Lowe and the Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
In their indispensable monograph Full Frequency Stereophonic Sound authors Robert Moon and Michael Gray have written: "This performance has been critically reviewed for over 30 years as one of the best of Mendelssohn's delightful score. It is a rendition of great warmth and verve. The Kingsway Hall acoustics result in sound that is a model of concert hall realism. Listen to the Scherzo and you'll love your 10th row seat: an up close picture of the orchestra with air around the instruments and superb imaging and depth…a clear winner." Indeed, they ranked it 1st among the Top Rank of FFSS productions, and the performance is simply magical from first bar to last, with sound to match.
There are liner notes (uncredited) on the rear panel, printed in German only.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, the flaws are quite minimal. There is slight evidence of shelfwear and some sort of stamp printed to the rear panel, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, a fine collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is outstanding – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
