ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This handsome gatefold album from Philips (835.307 LY, Trésors Classiques series, French pressing, red/white Tresors label, stereo) features two magnificent Beethoven performances, one by Clara Haskil and the other by Hans Richter-Haaser.

The exact discographic details are as follows:

Clara Haskil:

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor Op. 37

> with Igor Markevitch conducting l’Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux, Paris

(rec. in Paris on 1 December 1959)

Hans Richter-Haaser:

Beethoven Fantasy in C minor for Piano, Chorus, and Orchestra Op. 80

> with Karl Bohm conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Choir of the Vienna State Opera, and vocal soloists Teresa Stich-Randall (soprano), Judith Hellwig (mezzo-soprano), Erich Majkut (tenor), and Paul Schoeffler (bass)

(rec. in Vienna on 20 June 1957)

Note: Although this LP carries the later red/white label (vs. the pink/white “Hi-Fi Stereo” label), it is pressed on medium-weight vinyl and is not of the thin, “floppy” variety.

Incidentally, the front cover reproduces a photo by Sousse-Ohana. The left interior panel of the gatefold jacket contains superb liner notes by Henry Jacques, printed in French only. The right interior panel showcases full-color reproductions of other titles in the Tresors Classiques series.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD-. There is visible shelfwear and discoloration, as well as minor wear at corners. However, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains very solid, bright, and attractive – a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is enjoyable. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
