ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful LP from Deutsche Grammophon (SLPM 138 998, German pressing, tulip label, stereo) features Christian Ferras’ sublime accounts of Schumann’s 2 Violin Sonatas and the Drei Romanzen for Violin (orig. for Oboe), all made with the splendid pianist Pierre Barbizet in the rich acoustics of the Jesus Christus-Kirche, Berlin, on 19 May 1965.
The exact contents are as follows, all works by Robert Schumann:
Violin Sonata No. 1 in minor Op. 101
Violin Sonata No. 2 in A minor Op. 105
Drei Romanzen for Oboe (Violin) Op. 94
This is exalted playing by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the violin will find much to admire here. DG’s warm, well-balanced analog sound is superbly judged.
Incidentally, the memorable cover photo of Ferras and Barbizet was taken by Klaus Zimmermann, Hamburg. There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Willibald Götze, printed in German, English, and French.
This album was produced by Dr. Hans Hirsh and engineered by the young Klaus Scheibe, who would later work with Leonard Bernstein during the conductor’s Indian summer with DG.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the gatefold jacket is VERY GOOD. There is wear at corners and along the spine, as well as a slight scratch to the front panel and discoloration and a small sticker to the rear panel. However, there are no bends, seamsplits, or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and playback is superb, close to NM. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
