ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and exceedingly rare semi-private LP from Great Performances · Historic Recordings features early 78rpm recordings made by the great violinist Tibor Varga during the years 1939 to 1947.
The LP carries no catalog number nor is the country of manufacture stated – I suspect it is a German or Swiss pressing, but cannot guarantee that. It is pressed on fairly thick vinyl, and is immaculately done.
The exact contents are as follows:
Jeno Hubay: Zephir, No. 5 from 6 Blumenleben for Violin and Piano Op. 30
with pianist Istvan Pongracz
Frederic Chopin: Nocturne No. 2 in E-flat Major Op. 9 No. 2
with pianist Istvan Pongracz
Franco Ferrara: Burleska
with pianist Miklos Schwalb
Igor Stravinsky (arr. Samuel Dushkin): Berceuse, from The Firebird
with pianist Miklos Schwalb
Fritz Kreisler: Sicilienne and Rigaudon (in the style of Francoeur)
with pianist Miklos Schwalb
Erno von Dohnanyi: Ruralia Hungarica No. 6 Op. 32/A (Molto vivace)
with pianist Miklos Schwalb
Rene Principe: El Campielo
with pianist Hubert Greenslade
Gyorgy Geszler: Humming Top
with pianist Hubert Greenslade
Pablo de Sarasate: Introduction & Tarantella Op. 42
with pianist Gerald Moore
Karol Szymanowski: Fountain of Arethusa Op. 30 No. 1
with pianist Gerald Moore
Niccolò Paganini: Introduction & Variations on ‘Dal tuo stellato soglio”, from Rossini’s Mosé in Egitto’ MS23 (Op. 24)
with pianist Gerald Moore
Manuel de Falla: Danza española, from La vida breve
with pianist Gerald Moore
There are superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Jahn Havas, printed in German, English, and French. The striking cover design is uncredited.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There are instances of very light edgewear, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the jacket remains solid, bright, glossy, and highlly attractive– overall, a very fine collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Please note: Any surface noise heard on this LP stems from the original 78s. Thus, surfaces are not silent, but this is no reflection of the condition of the LP – it is from the source material and the transfer work. This is a truly fine copy, but I am grading it as EX (vs. NM) just to compensate for the inherent surface noise.
