Despite tossing around the idea of doing a sequel to Murder Ballads, ultimately Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds switched gears to offer a more tender and sedate album. This isn't quite The Good Son 2, though; the themes here are much more focused, focusing on romantic subjects and shot through with a streak of pessimism of a sort not found on The Good Son. The romantic pessimism of the album is perhaps best captured on the captivating People Ain't No Good, but really the entire album is a treat, with a subdued piano-led atmosphere which makes me wish there were a bar near me which were cool enough to play this late at night.
