Standard Grades for Record Albums

Sealed Albums

Be careful when bidding for sealed LPs of any kind for several reasons: (1) Potential for re-sealing, (2) Condition factors, (3) Differentiations in sleeving identifiers  and vinyl‑records pressing, and (4) Vinyl record sleeved is separate artist or composition.

MINT (M)

From its’ manufacturer pressing and sleeving, to its’ collector ownership into a music library, “mint” condition vinyl records represent perfection amongst participating parties.

MINT MINUS (M‑)

From its’ manufacturer pressing and sleeving, to its’ collector ownership into a music library, “near mint” (M‑) condition vinyl records are records perfectly conditioned in dynamic/visual appeal concurrent to no playtime as well as hands‑on inspection.

NEAR MINT (NM OR M-)

From its’ manufacturer pressing and sleeving, to its’ collector ownership into a music library, “near mint” (NM) condition vinyl records reflect slight‑of‑hand tricks of dynamic/visual handling.

EXCELLENT PLUS (E+)

Excellent‑Plus condition vinyl records will have no more than one tell‑tale sign of wear, use, or handling; meaning its’ dynamic/visual appeal are still conditioned to collector standards.

EXCELLENT (E)

Excellent condition vinyl records may show no more than one tell‑tale sign of wear, use, or handling; to both, its’ original pressing and original sleeving.

VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+)

Very‑Good Plus (VG+) condition vinyl records will have multiple tell‑tale signs of wear, use, and/or handling; to both, its’ original pressing and original sleeving.  However, VG+ condition vinyl records should not distract a collector from enjoying its’ original pressings dynamic appeal or its’ original pressings visual appeal.

Also, a VG+ cover may have some defacing, such as a cut-out marking. Covers with cut-out markings can never be considered Near Mint.

Very Good (VG)
Very Good (VG) condition vinyl records are obvious to everyday wear, use, and/or handling; to both, its’ original pressing and original sleeving.  However, in addition to everyday wear, use, and/or handling, its’ lack luster in dynamic appeal and visual appeal becomes distinguished.  Due to a collectors ability to experience a recording at a fractional cost, lack luster vinyl records in VG condition are great bargaining‑chips before committing a recording to one’s collection.

Good Plus (G+)

Good Plus (G+) condition vinyl records lack luster in dynamic appeal and visual appeal as distinguished above its incumbent purpose.  Distinguishing tell‑tale signs for G+ condition vinyl records are signs of wear, use, handling, and may either have factors of vinyl warping/sleeve defacing.

Good (G),

Good (G) condition vinyl records lack luster in dynamic appeal and visual appeal as distinguished above its incumbent purpose.  Distinguishing tell‑tale signs for G condition vinyl records are signs of wear, use, handling, and both factors of vinyl warping/sleeve defacing.

Fair (F)

Fair (F) condition vinyl records are simply pleasurable to own for collectors.  As there is no significant dynamic/visual value to owning a vinyl record in F condition, except for its significance as a product.  For instance, some antique records are likely a haphazard collectible.

POOR (P)

As an object for appraisal, a Poor (P) condition vinyl record is dangerously significant to sentimental value.
