ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful LP from Deutsche Grammophon (423 250-1, German pressing, white circle label, DDD stereo, booklet included) features the eminent LaSalle Quartet in powerful and deeply expressive accounts of Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht Op. 4 (string sextet version) and the String Trio Op. 45, both recorded in 1983 (producer: Rainer Brock / engineers: Klaus Scheibe (Op. 4) and Wolfgang Mitlehner (Op. 45)).

The LaSalle were comprised of violinists Water Levin and Henry Meyer, violist Peter Kamnitzer and cellist Lee Fiser) and it is Levin, Meyer and Fiser one hears in the Op. 45. In the haunting "Transfigured Night", the LaSalle Quartet is joined by violist Donald McInnes and cellist Jonathan Pegis.

It should be mentioned that the LaSalle Quartet was among the most devoted champions of the music of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, creating a performance tradition and paving the way for so many of the ensembles who have followed since – this is an important disc.

Incidentally, the striking cover photo was taken by H. Wolter/K. Strindberg, Hamburg. Included is a  6-page, full-size double-gatefold booklet with extensive liner notes by Juliane Ribke, printed in German, English, and French.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is slight cracking and wear to the upper edge (no splts), but that is all. There are no bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector’s copy.
