Terry Riley invented a whole new musical style called minimalism, minimal music, pattern music, phase music, etc. It was based on modal scales, and owed much to jazz and Hindustani classical music. Rainbow in Curved Air  showcases basic pattern technique and improvising with the patterns, making gorgeous timbre changes on the synthesizers and organs. Riley plays all the instruments on the title side: electric organ, electric harpsichord (Rock-Si-Chord), dumbec (or goblet drum), and tambourine. This LP helped define psychedelic music of the 60s era.
