Except Randy isn't on it – on tour with his one man show – he is replaced by Carlos, who apparently was the drummer with the band . Now The Residents were always anonymous  - but now they have persona which are probably totally fictitious. They are supposed to come from Louisiana and those of you who do quizzes and the like will know that “Coochie Brake” is a cypress swamp in that state. Apparently this strange mysterious place was where The Residents used to camp as kids. The cover of this album depicts John West who was a Sunday school teacher and used Coochie Brake to hide the gold he stole from people he murdered – circa 1860’s. Apparently he is possibly the most ruthless mass murderer in the history of the USA. (Now that takes some doing). Of course, this being The Residents, you are never quite sure what to believe.

What is certain is that “Coochie Brake” is another wonderful “movie for the ears” from The Residents  - whoever they might be. On this album its would appear to be mostly Charles Bobuck and guest N Cook & M Villalobos – but I do not know if Charles Bobuck exists – let alone the other two. Musically, there is more guitar than usual and in places, “Coochie Brake” sounds almost like prog rock – except then it doesn't – and becomes some delightful Mexican piece. As for what it is all about – I have not got a clue since nearly all the lyrics and spoke word sections are in Spanish! The titles from the terrific opening track “Theater Of Shadows” to the closing “Please Don’t Go” do not give many clues either. Still, “Coochie Brake” is a very welcome addition to The Resident’s enormous back catalogue, it is extremely accessible (why The Residents are considered “difficult” I haven’t got a clue) and a very fine record.
