ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and exceedingly rare LP from French Capitol (P 8536, French pressing, rainbow label, mono, "baguette"-style jacket, dowel spine) features legendary violinist Nathan Milstein, partnered with pianist Leon Pommers, in a magical program of encores.

Milstein plays with unfailing imagination and grace and one sense a powerful re-creative personality behind the bow, each bon-bon brought off with tremendous elan and charm.

The exact contents, recorded at Capitol Studios, New York, in 1959/1960 are as follows:

Side 1

Fritz Kreisler: Praeludium & Allegro ("In the Style of Gaetano Pugnani")

Robert Schumann: Abenlied Op. 85 No. 12

Karol Szymanowski: Notturno & Tarantella Op. 28

Side 2

George Frideric Handel: Larghetto, from the Violin Sonata in D Major Op. 1 No. 13

Jean-Marie Leclair (arr. Fritz Kreisler): “Tambourin”, 4th Movement from the Sonata for Violin, Flute, and Basso Continuo Op. 9 No. 3

Fritz Kreisler: Sicilienne et Rigaudon ("In the Style of François Francoeur")

Felix Mendelssohn (arr. Fritz Kreisler): Song without Words Op. 62 No. 5

Johannes Brahms: Waltz in A Major

Ede Poldini (arr. Fritz Kreisler): Poupée Valsante

Incidentally, the striking cover photo is credited to Capitol. There are superlative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in French only.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor bumping and wear at corners, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT-. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. There is a very brief patch of light surface noise in the Poldini-Kreisler, else it plays NM-. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
