This handsome and exceedingly rare 3LP box set – a fine collector's copy – from Melodiya (catalog numbers provided below, Russian pressing, red/black labels, stereo, booklet included) features legendary Russian cellist Daniel Shafran in his exalted survey of the Bach Suites for Solo Cello, all recorded in Moscow during the years 1969 to 1975, a true landmark in the Bach discography and still among the greatest versions of these works nearly a half century on.

Suite for Solo Cello No. 1 in G major BWV 1007 – recorded in 1970

Suite for Solo Cello No. 2 in D minor BWV 1008 – recorded in 1973

Suite for Solo Cello No. 3 in C major BWV 1009  – recorded in 1969

Suite for Solo Cello No. 4 in E-flat major BWV 1010 – recorded in 1974

Suite for Solo Cello No. 5 in C minor BWV 1011 – recorded in 1974

Suite for Solo Cello No. 6 in D major BWV 1012 – recorded in 1974

The sound as a lovely bloom and resonance, as if in a warm ecclesiastical setting and the masterly playing by Shafran, which has such a remarkably vocal quality – soars off the grooves.

Included is the full-size, 4-page booklet with insightful liner notes by Israel Yampolsky, provided in both Russian and English.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is EX. The box top does not close down all the way to the lower edge in a tight fit, and the upper panel is not completely flat, but believe it was like this from the manufacturer. There no seam splits, corner breaks, owners' markings, or other defects, and the box remains perfectly solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive. Overall, rates as an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the original 4-page booklet is EX – there are some tiny tears to the interior pages, but no text is lost and the damage is quite minor.

The condition of the 3 LPs is EX. Though surfaces are not silent (and thus I have rated it EX vs NM), these are fine copies and playback is quite fine, with great life-like sound and presence. Please note, however, if you must have flawless surfaces, then please do not buy this set – these rate as EX collector's copies.
